Thursday

We survived Yom Kippur with not eating a whole day. Fasting is not such a bad thing. I wouldn't want to do it regularly but once a year it is doable. And it is for a good reason.

Now the Jews are preparing for Succoth.

Not far from where we live there is a good middle class area where a lot of semi-orthodox Jews live.
That means that all the stores on Saturdays and Jewish holidays are closed and the bank is open on Sundays.

Today the sidewalks where all the stores are were crowded with tables where "fast money making" merchants were selling Succoth stuff.

That included equipment to build the such but primarily the citron (etrog) and palm fronds.

The citron is an Israely lemon that has religious significance. It is quite larger than the regular lemon and edible.

Anyway the more knowledgeable people were examining these fruits with magnifying glasses because the good ones have to follow some ancient rules. I think it has to do something with the ridges.

The palm fronds were also meticulously examined because they also have to follow the ancient rules.

Right now none of these things are cheap but I think as the holiday approaches so will there prices go down.

The holiday comes in on Monday so we will check the prices again Monday afternoon.
