In 1896 Pierre Coubertin revived the ancient Olympic Games. His dream was to have the yout of the world meet in healthy competition. These games went ahead for a long time keeping the amateur spirit alive, meaning that professionals were not permitted to take part.
Well, this line of thinking is now out the window. If one is not a professional, there is no way to stay in shape and make a living at the same time. Sadly, the Olympic Games are now in the hands of the politicians. Their thinking and behavior is controlling these games.
To protest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, the US boycotted the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Now what did they achieve by it other than screw up the lives of all the American athletes who were training for this once in a lifetime opportunity.
Now, the politicians are getting their noses sticking into the Olympic thing. The Winter Games are starting in China on February 3 and to protest certain anti humanitarian things by China, the US decided not to send a government level representation to the Games. Good, at least they will be no freeloaders there from my tax money.
But some politicians are calling for the total boycott, and I just hate that. These people have nothing to lose. The only losers would be the poor athletes who gave up a lot to be in form and be able to compete. But nobody is thinking about them, and that is a shame. I still don't understand what would they achieve if the US decides not to attend?
