Friday

Right now it is countdown time for our upcoming Las Vegas trip. We are leaving tomorrow at 2:40 in the afternoon from NY and will arrive at LV around 7:30 pm. That's ok because at \least we don't have t get up at the crack of dawn.

We will amply make up for this little comfort because on our return trip our non stop flight leaves LV at 6 am. That means getting up around 3. Now this is brutal. But we had no choice.

It was an interesting experience that how difficult it was to find non-stop flights between NY and LV. This is our second trip and both times we had to change plane going there and were only able to come home on a non-stop flight.

But hopefully it will all work out and our trip will be fine. Since Abigail will be with us we will try to make sure  she has a good time. Obviously, we will not be able to do as much casino visits as planned but we will see.

Since this time our visit is limited to one week there is no major preparations necessary. We are talking a very casual attitude about the packing. A few pieces of clothing and that's it.  There is no need to bring an entire wardrobe.

We have tickets to two shows which will require a little better dress up but that is all.

I will  stop writing until our return which is scheduled for the the 30th of April.

Thursday.

This morning I called my cousin in Budapest. Haven't spoken to him in a long time and it was due that I call him. I have a much better calling plan than he has so it is an accepted fact that I do the telephoning. I pay a penny a minute and I'm sure his cost a lot more.

He lives alone, never been married and he accepted his life under these circumstances. He has a girlfriend for the last 45+ years but they are not living together and she is up in age and not very well.

Still he is not bitter and I love him. He is the closest blood relative I have in this world. My father's brother's son. Can't get any closer.

Anyway he was complaining that the part of the city he lives in is becoming worse and worse. He says the main drag front of his house is full of Arabs.

Hungary was a central point of the Arab refugee influx and many of them were successful in getting and it appears staying in there. He says the streets are filed with them and that doesn't give a very safe feeling to anybody.

What a difference from last year. I was there last May and there was no sign of such problems at all.

Things like these really make a person think about future travels.. Unused to be a refugee but nobody ever looked at me as someone dangerous and nobody was ever fraud of me.

Maybe because I was a nice Jewish boy.

Wednesday

When not much is happening in one's life it is difficult to separate one day from the other. Where we live there is alternate parking on the street. That means that on the days the City cleans the street parking is prohibited between 10:30 am and noon.

People who park on the street have to jockey for parking places and with some this is becoming a real chore.

In our street Wednesday and Thursday are the cleaning days. That means that on Wednesday our side is empty meaning carless. That is how I can tell the days apart.

Since our car is in the garage this restriction does not bother us.

Now, that I devoted more time to this subject than it is worth I really don't know what to write about.

Actually I do.

Since Abigail is our new traveling partner we decided she needed a new suitcase. We went to three store to look and found that the least expensive and smallest started at $49.95. It seems that the luggage manufacturers all have a fixation with this number.

She is 13 years old and $50 seemed a little high for an inexpensive suitcase. So, we looked and looked and finally this afternoon we prevailed.

We found two small suitcases for $29.95. One for her and one for us as a carry-on. I'll bet these are made just as good as the others except they just don't have the names people are paying for.

Tuesday

Today we had a very busy day. I don't remember if I mentioned it earlier that we made arrangements to go to Las Vegas for a week. That week planned to begin on this coming Saturday.

We naturally were getting ready even though it is just a one week trip but stuff have to be ready. Anyway, due to some family disagreement it was necessary for us to make some changes. Our original "group" of two now expanded to three.

The third person joining us is Abigail. It is her Spring break and this way she is not missing school. When she was told at first she wasn't too enthusiastic about the idea but slowly throughout the afternoon and evening she did get a little excited.

She has never been to Las Vegas and understandably a little afraid of it. We assured her that there are a its of things to do and we will be a family together and will have a good time together.

The flip side of this coin is that we had to buy her a plane ticket. That ticket because of the lateness of time cost more than two of ours. The other problem was that since all planes were practically full the one seat could not be next to ours.

I spent at least two hours on the phone with Delta trying to arrange our seats so we could at least be near to one another. I mean we are a family, and the  least they should do is make an effort for our benefit not just collect the big bucks.

Anyway at the end it all worked out. Even if we are not sitting together one of us only one row away.

And guess who that will be.

Monday

Just a little additional note to yesterday's ice skating event. When my friend and I used to go ice skating in Budapest we frequented the largest ice skating rink in the city. It was all artificial ice and hat was the in place to skate.

So, in the winters, after we did our homework we went out and skated. It wasn't the sport it was the hopeless hope of meeting girls. We never succeeded but in the meantime we excersized. The place was usually open from morning until about 10 pm with no interruptions.

They usually fixe the ice during the night and the daily wear and tear just stayed for the day. If we were there for a long time we usually learned where the larger cracks where and tried to avoid them.

But it was good enough for us.

Now here things are different. The place is open from 12 noon until 4:45 pm and every hour and a half they clear the ice and a big Zamboni machine comes in and wets down the ice thus eliminating all the wear and tear. After it is finished the ice is like brand new.

The sad thing is that everybody is used to it and nobody realizes how good they have it.

But hey, this is America!

Sunday

Last two weeks Abigail had to take some serious tests in school. They were hard and nerve wrecking. Fortunately she completed them all with good results.

She and her friends decided that when the tests were over they would go ice skating. Well, today was the day.

Not far from where we live is a huge City park, the scene of the two World's Fairs New York City ever held and in that park there is a very large sport complex open to the public.

In one half of th building there is an olympic size pool while in the other half there is a good size indoor ice skating rink. This rink is open all year round.

That is where her and her friends went. Naturally we chaperoned the small group and stayed a hole watching the kids to get their acts together. None of them one how to skate so it was a funny sight at first but being kids they quickly learned the tricks of balance and managed the slippery environment.

Since I spent many years in my youth at the ice skating rink in Budapest I was itching to put on skates and go out on the ice but did not. I didn't want to make a fool of myself just in case I don't skate as well as I think I do.

So, while the kids skated we went out on a nice large walk in that park. Today was beautiful day, the park was full and we had a good time together. We saw blooming cherry trees that was a first for me. I ever saw any.

We just had a great adult time out there.

Afterwards the kids and us went for a late lunch (sat at separate tables) and the day was over. Right now Abigail is having muscle pains in her legs but that was expected. She didn't fall much so her backside  does not hurt.

Saturday

I always maintained that I hate shopping. I don't like shopping for someone else and I just hate shopping for myself.

That all changed today.

Because of my lovely wife and happy life I have to admit that I put on a few pounds. The result is that most of my clothing is more than body hugging. Some stuff I can not get into at all while some of my pants are being altered or in plain english let out.

Some other pants are already let out and the tailor can find no more material to do the job. Most of my shirts are too tight while my suits can only be worn if I don't breathe.

So today we went out and bought a few things. Actually today was not the first day because a couple of weeks ago we went out and bought about four sport shirts of a larger size.

Today we bought a beautiful dark pair of slacks, four sport shirts and four summer jackets. Actually because it was a good deal we also bought a jacket for next fall.

So now I am set, everything look very good and what is the most important thing is they all fit.

And I didn't have a bad time at all.

Something else.

Two days ago I committed a faux pas of major proportions. Two days ago was my wife's birthday.
That day I got up early in the morning, wished her a Happy Birthday with a kiss and took Abigail to school.

On the way back I was very anxious to get home and I totally forgot to buy her flowers. It was a blunder I admit. She was very hurt and no amount of explaining or begging for forgiveness helped. She said I insulted her for life and this is something a person never forgets.

I am in the doghouse for life. I hurt her without meaning to. I love her very much and the last thing I ever want to do is to hurt her. I don't know what to do get back into her good graces but whatever it takes I'll do.

I wish I could turn back the clock and correct my blunder but  know that is not possible.

Politics - Again

I am totally confused. Today I heard in the new the the New York Post a local daily newspaper endorse Donald Trump for president. At the same time a former New York governor George Pataki decided to support Kasich.

Now I really don't know what to do. The New York Post is a very respected newspaper if tabloid dirt can be respectable.

The other one is George Pataki. He was a nice guy. He was of Hungarian origin but didn't speak a word in Hungarian. But regardless, I liked him.

When two of these important establishments side with their candidates what an ordinary candidate supposed to do?

Now that I know that the Post believes that Trump will make the best president I am really convince. However George Pataki's opinion is also very valuable. Now that he thinks Katich will make a good president I really have no idea what to think.

Pataki was a governor of New York State. His only claim to fame was that he had a Hungarian name. That was all. Didn't speak a word in Hungarian but liked Hungarian food. I know because several times he stopped at a Hungarian restaurant on Second Avenue.

His choice of food was good but that doesn't make him an expert on choosing the next president.

I wrote this before that I hate when candidates are endorsed by newspapers or other politicians or other public entities and that supposed to influence me.

It will not. Now, if he like sholet maybe I'll think about it.

Thursday

When we moved I notified the Motor Vehicle Office of my change of address. I was told that there would be no new license issued until the current one expired.

This meant that until 20121 I would have no identification showing my new address. My wife and I didn't like this situation so this morning we went into the jungles of the Motor Vehicle Office.

It went a lot simper. After paying out $17.25 I was told that I would receive my new license in about two weeks.

Now why do they give this bad information when asked? Because the people who work there are mainly idiots.

Many years ago the Motor Vehicle Department employees were the rudest of all local government. Now they are not rude they are just plain stupid.

Another thing well handled by me!

Wednesday

Tomorrow is my wife's birthday so today we started our celebrations. My custom and probably the Hungarian custom is that we celebrate the night before. Because of that we went out to dinner tonight.

It doesn't mean that tomorrow will go unmentioned but we started off tonight.

We know a nice Czech restaurant not far from where we live and decided to go there. Being Wednesday night the place that is usually packed on the weekends was almost empty and finding a nice table was no problem at all.

We drank and we ate. The food was good. It was the three of us and each of us ate something different. My wife had a pork schnitzel, Abigail had a chicken schnitzel and I had a roasted and smoked pork combination.

At the end of the meal everybody was happy. Oh yea, we, the adults washed the meal down with a good Pilsner.

Tomorrow is another day and we don't know exactly what we will be doing.

Tuesday

It is raining, it is cool and it is just plain miserable outside. So what is there for a man to do on a day like this?

First I took Abigail to school. Then when I got home and was expecting my wife's warm embrace I was told that today we do laundry. Now that is something to look forward to. But it has to get done.
Unfortunately, my underwear is not self-cleaning.

Now there is a great business idea. Self cleaning underwear. That would be great if somebody could invent such a thing. You wear it all day then during the night it self cleans itself and next morning it is clean and fresh. I'll think about this.

Even though my wife always insists that she can take care of these things by herself I vehemently disagree. We are team and I am here to help. I might be lazy but I am not the old fashioned husband who believes that a "woman's place is in the kitchen".

We are a team and I am here to help with whatever chores she can think I can help her with. If it were up to me I wouldn't clean so much and if it were up to me I wouldn't do laundry so frequently but que sera sera!

Self cleaning underwear, huh?

Monday

Very quiet and uneventful day today. My wife and I spent the morning relaxing at home enjoying the peace and quiet. Abigail was off to school so we made the most of being alone.

With no definite plans for the day we left the house around 12:30 pm and got home just before seven.

What did we really do? I don't know but I do know that we went in and out of a lot of stores and took several hopping bags home at the end.

O.k. we did some incidental food shopping. There is always need for more food in our house. We go off to some serious shopping and a few days later our fridges are half empty. I wonder where all the stuff disappear to!

Maybe if we didn't buy so much good stuff they might stay longer.

Once we picked Abigail up from school we went off to see if we can buy her ONE pair of jeans.

Dis anybody ever knew a female who was satisfied with one pair of anything and who ever made shopping easy?

Abigail is no exception. We had to go to two stores until we found a pair to her liking and along the way we bought stuff that were not on our shopping list at all. They were jus there!

Sunday

It is Sunday and thankfully the eventful week is over. I am excitedly awaiting what next week will bring.

Like I said before, never a dull moment.

Today we finally made the storage people happy by taking away the stuff they complained about. We rented a small track and hauled the stuff away and dumped it at our building. The handyman helped and said the sanitation truck will take them away. He was rewarded for his prophecy!

Now I have to correct some possibly misunderstood information.

I said we moved our furniture. I also said we moved my wife's furniture. I also said we reorganized the storage and moved a lot of stuff.

This WE really did not include me. My wife would not let me do any heavy work. So, when I said we it meant them and me supervising. But I offered a lot of constructive criticism and that ain't nothing!

I actually got very tired many times from all those supervisings.

Saturday

Yesterday's storage escapade didn't go as well as we thought.

You see during our moving process we also threw out a few pieces of furniture. But throwing out meant that we took them to the back and hoped that when they come and clean the place they would just get rid of our stuff too. but we were not that lucky.

Today they called us and informed us that when they checked their closed circuit cameras they were able to identify us and if we don't come and pick up our crap we would have to pay a penalty.

Well, the last thing I want too pay a hefty fine. So, I rented a truck for tomorrow and we will be going to the storage and will remove our unwanted pieces. That is our un-scheduled program for Sunday.

As I always say, never a dull moment!

But in retrospect, I really don't mind. It is a lot better than live a dull and uneventful life. Some excitement I can be without but most of these I really don't mind. Mainly because they can be resolved.

This was basically the main event for today. The rest was just some mundane weekly shopping that is absolutely necessary if one wants to eat.

Storage Friday

Today we had a very busy day. We have a lot of stuff we really don't know what to do with. Many of them are mine and just as many are my wife's. When we moved into our new apartment we had to combine all our belongings, with reason and what didn't fit went into storage.

Storage is a great thing. In short: ten pounds of shit into a five pound bag!

Stuff one does not want to throw out but can not be without is being relegated to storage life. And that is what happening to us. We rented out a 10ft by 10ft room to store our unwanted belongings. Last month they advised us that the monthly rental was being increased by @100. Well, that was enough for us to start to think about a smaller storage room. Today was the day when we went to the place and told them that if we could not get a smaller place we old move our stuff to another place. You should see how fast they accommodated us to a smaller storage room (5ft by 10ft). That meant that today we had to move everything over to the smaller compartment. So, we moved and moved. Naturally we threw a lots of stuff away but still there wa plenty left. My wife's son and hi girlfriend helped because without their muscles we just could not hack this problem. At the end w congratulated ourselves because everything fit into the smaller room and still the place looks organized. This is something that in due time can always change. Periodically we can visit the place and discard things we didn't want to part with at earlier times. But until they raise the rent again we just stay.

Thursday

Today my wife decided that I don't possess the right quality and quantity clothing. I have to admit that I agree with her. Most of my stuff is aged and because in recent time I did get some love handles my stuff is more apt to be body hugging than not.

So we went shopping. We bought some summer khakis and several polo shirts. Buying and paying was the easy part the difficult thing for me is the trying on. I loath to go to the fitting room and try on things. But at the nd I was happy with the final result because everything is cool.

Oh, I also bought a beautiful winter overcoat. I know this is the beginning of spring but it was such a good deal that I just couldn't pass it up. Besides, I don't have an overcoat. The last one I had I wore for work and when I retired it was thrown out.

When we go to the Opera or theaters I really have nothing to wear over my jacket. So, today was shopping day for little old me.

I have to admit that my wife has impeccable taste because e everything she selected for me look really neat.

Where would I be without her.

Wednesday

It is Wednesday and we had a very lovely day today. It started with me taking Abigail to school in the morning. There is nothing wrong to get an early start to a day because a lot more can be done that way. And today was just like that. We invited a very good friend and his wife to lunch and my wife wanted to have a good start for the preparations. By the time they got to our house everything was ready. We had a good lunch and good conversation. Him and I used to work together and that is where our friendship started and has been going on now for about sixteen years. Him and his wife are both Hungarians which really has no bearing on anything except that we conducted our conversations in Hungarian. Lunch was chicken noodle soup, black blood sausages and spicy kielbasa, chicken cutlets with bacon and mashed potatoes. For dessert we had coffee and various cakes and "palacsinta". My friend who is on a constant diet enjoyed everything down to the last morsel. Oh yes we also had water and beer. Now, that was a good midweek lunch for a bunch of retired people.

Tuesday

Like the title says it is Tuesday. Ridiculously when we woke up early in the morning it was below freezing, I don't remember an April when we had such a cold temperatures as we are having. But hey, when one lives long enough he is apt to experience curious things.

The other day there was an interesting report on the internet. It said that scientists published a report saying that due to environmental changes the rate of the melting of the Antarctic ice is so fast that in 80 years, around 2100 the sea level will reach critical heights.

That sounds pretty scary except unless there is some miracle I will not be around to experience it. But Abigail has a good chance to see it. I told her that if this prophecy comes true our street might have ship traffic instead of automobile traffic.

Also, cruise ships will be able to come up to people's homes and provide door to door service. And, instead of going to the Caribbean they will navigate the Adirondacks or the Swiss Alps. Nice world we are looking forward to.

Monday

This is now day two of the new life of the blog. It feels good to be able to sit down and write whatever comes to mind.

Actually, nothing comes to my mind and that is pretty disturbing. Outside in the living room on TV a station is playing Mamma Mia the movie. My wife and I love that. I think we each have seen it about fifteen times but it is never enough.

As soon as I'm done with this I will be watching it too.

Today is a very crappy day. It has been raining all day long and that makes everything gloomy and gray.

Our new car is working great. It is a little weird to have only one car in the family but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

I am also slowly getting used to the new computer. As I sat down front of it my wife brought me a plate of sliced apple. I didn't know what to with it. Eat it or sacrifice it to the computer being an Apple computer.

I made an important decision  and ate the stuff.

A New Life

Welcome to my new blog. Due to the intricacies of technology this damn thing ate my old blog. From one day to the next it just disappeared from the face of the earth into the bowels of computer technology.

What ticked me off was that when I was looking for it a message came back saying that I am not an author so there is nothing in there. What nerve they ave. I wrote almost 800 articles and they just buried it. And, there is nobody to talk to nobody to call.

Actually we get what we pay for. This service is free.

In short: Google sucks! at least in my book.

The last time I wrote it was Good Friday. Not much happened since. The new car has the new bumpers installed and now it can be safely parked on the street. Somebody hits the car we will hit back.

One of Abigail's life ambition is to become a chef (or chefette as I call it). She plans to study culinary science and see where life will take her. On that note last night she cooked for us a scrumptious herb crusted chicken breast dinner with all the necessary sides. Tonight it will be garlic crusted roast beef with potatoes and carrots.

Saturday's dinner was great and I'm sure tonight's will be just as good.

We have a new Apple computer which is giving me ageda. I am used to the good old Windows 10 and on this thing everything is new and not working the way I expect it to.

So, now I have two enemies in this house. The monster refrigerator and the Apple computer. The refrigerator I am staying away from but the computer I have to get used to. Believe me it is not easy. I curse a lot because nothing works the way I wanted to.

Probably this computer stole my blog, too. This thing has a mind of its own and unfortunately we don't share much.

But enough crying. Life goes on and hopefully tomorrow I can find this blog again.
