Thursday

Today is Wednesday, the Market closed a while back. From their mouth/pens to God's ears they say that the Brexit panic is over.

I wish I could believe it. These people are the best on past tense forecasting. But still the bottom line is that now two days in the row the Market seemed to bounce back from its Friday and Monday lows.

As I read the news reports they will dish it out to England and business will continue as usual. Its all fine with me.

I don't know if I ever purchase anything that was marked Made in Great Britain.

Anyway, what do the British make besides fog and little Brits? Even the famous London Fog brand is probably made in China.

Something else.

Today the day was spent on doctor visits. I visited my urologist and my gp. My wife came with me just in case I needed emotional support. We spent an enormous amount of times in the waiting rooms.

I don't know where these doctors learn this attitude towards the patients. They think that our time isn't worth anything only theirs?

In one office we waited about an hour and half before being called in in the other we waited almost three hours before being called in.

Terrible and upsetting. But the good news was that both doctors gave me a clean bill of health! I am very grateful to my wife who watches me and keeps me in good health.

Tuesday

Today was the last official day for Abigail at her Middle School. They gave out the report cards, they bid them goodbye and a new chapter for their lives is beginning.

She is understandably scared of high school. New environment, new people who hopefully will form the circle of new friends. Studying will no longer be games and movies but serious work. Maybe the first year might be easier but after that the real work will start. This is all in preparation for college.

Now if she is scared of high school wait until the college time arrives.

But I think a part of childhood just ended today. Her friends are making programs for almost every day. I think they are more together now than in past times. Hopefully some will remain connected in spite of going to different schools.

At this time many of her friends live in this neighborhood. High school friend will be coming from different parts of the City while college friends might be from other parts of the country.

In my time all my friends lived in the same neighborhood making daily contact very easy. We just walked over to each others' houses and that was it.

As a final note I have to add that Abigail is a very bright little girl. Her year end report card is very good and I just hope she will keep maintaining her enthusiasm about studying and her future.

Monday

I usually go to the doctors every six months and then only for checkups. Well, unless it is urgent I don't wait for the six month time. So, being the end of June I decided to lean up my slate before the month is up.

I started last week with my dentist. It followed the dermatologist, today was the eye doctor and Wednesday will be my urologist and my GP.

At my dentist I found out that I need gum treatment and a few days later he called to tell me that the x-ray showed a cavity.

My dermatologist removed two things from my face for with I have to call this week for the biopsy results.

Today the eye doctor as not very happy with my glaucoma measurements because he told me the numbers went up and chided me for not doing the prescribed drops.

Now I hope the urologist and the GP will at least give me a clean bill of health at least as far as they are concerned.

The thing with these doctors is that I feel fine. The scary thing is that what they find wrong has no symptoms like my eyes. I see pretty well meaning I don't feel the glaucoma. But I really don't want to ignore it and I will do whatever he says.

The same with my gums. I never realized there were any problems but since I trust my dentist I believe his advice and will go back for the treatments.

I guess with age come problems. Easier said than accept it. But since there is very little one can do about it just like taxes all that is remaining is I have to be careful and not to do stupid things.

Sunday

This morning I turned on the TV to watch a little soccer. Morning actually is a misnomer because it was almost 11:30 by that time.

There is a European Cup tournament going on in France with a bunch of European countries' involvement including Hungary. Being Sunday morning several games are being broadcast live.

In my younger days I was never a soccer fan but weighing my options between baseball and american football soccer is looking better and better. So, now I am a fan.

Actually chess looks better than baseball!

Watching these soccer games, not just the national teams but top notch clubs also it never amazes me the enthusiasm of the fans.

They follow their clubs, they travel to the games, they carry club or national colors, they are boisterous on their favorites' behalf.

This afternoon Hungary will play Belgium but we won't be home to watch it. If by some miracle I will be able to master the intricacies of  recording that every three year olds know I will record the match.

As an afterthought, I also beginning to like rugby or Australian football or that sport by any name. Now that is a real man's sport. Not that sissy American football.

Saturday

I always said if one lives long enough he sees too many changes in life. Some are good some are bad some are just plain disturbing.

On Thursday England voted to exit the European Union. I remember when the EU came into the forefront of news because its popularity and because countries waited in line to join.

Now I think I see the beginning of its end. I think if one big country leaves others will follow and leave the small and poor countries behind to fend for themselves.

Basically something like this shouldn't bother me but right now the market is in the dumps and nobody knows what the next week will bring.

Another interesting point is the number of Europeans mainly East Europeans who went to England to work and because of the EU they were free to do it. Now their future is totally insecure. Or rather it is now secure in the fact that I am sure England will make them all leave within a certain time.

I do know a few people who left Hungary and went to England to find a better future. I really feel sorry for them. 59 years ago I also went to a strange country to look for a better future and I was lucky enough to find it.

The Hungarian government was and probably still is upset because of the talent continuously leaving the country. Now they probably hope that some of them might return but I really doubt that they will.

Myself being a Hungarian my sympathies lie only with the Hungarian ex-pats. Other nationalities should look for sympathy elsewhere.

Something else.

Tonight we had a fantastic dinner. My wife made a cauliflower casserole (Hungarian style: rakott karfiol), wine, cake and fresh fruit. That was the menu. Pretty good for an ordinary Saturday nigh, right?

Friday

During our trip to Coney Island with a bunch of teenagers I came to a world shattering conclusion. Fourteen year olds have the attention span of a kumquat and the intelligence of a gnat.

They really don't care about anything but themselves and playing games. God save us if life makes us relying on them for any kind of help.

I am trying to think back to when I was at that age and I am sure that neither me or any of my friends were so self centered as these kids are. I know they are only fourteen but still. I don't know what they learn in school but I am convinced they have no clue what goes on in the world. And they don't even care.

They are convinced that if anything bad is about to happen their parents or at least the grownups will fix it. Perfect example is that when we are sitting in heavy traffic and it looks like we will be late for school it is I who is responsible and it is I who has to fix the problem. She has absolutely no conception of what might cause traffic problems. Or just doesn't care.

And this is our future generation. At this moment it's frightening.

Something else.

A little philosophy:

"If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

This question has been around for a while and I guess it was digested several times.

I have that same question with a little variation.

"If one pees in the shower and nobody know about it is it still disgusting?"

Wednesday/Thursday

As I mentioned before Wednesday we were supposed to take Abigail and a few of her friends to the beach for a day of sun and fun.

Final result was they had the fun and we got the sun.

Anyway the day wasn't all that bad. Wasn't all that good either but it could haven worst. The kids wanted to go to Coney Island and each wanted to sit om ten horses with one behind (olde Hungarian saying).

We visited the Aquarium which happened to be pretty interesting then on to the beach which was really next door. The kids played ball, ran in and out of the water while we sat and gazed into thin air.

With the exception of the Aquarium we stayed pretty far away because we were told not to come near them. I forgot to tell it was ten kids. Five girls and five boys.

The Aquarium was the exception because fourteen year olds can only go in with adult supervision and we were asked to be their "adult supervision".

After lunch they decide to go into the amusement park and go on some rides. By now they were getting a little tired and we hoped to start going home around four. But one thing these kids have and that is energy. They wanted to stay until about six (from nine in the morning) but we told Abigail that no way we would stay that long.

Finally we started to head home at five in the middle of the rush hour traffic. I don't have to tell that Abigail was deeply hurt and pissed and didn't talk to us all the way home because we dared to interrupt her day with her friends.

Kids are funny. The only thing they think of is themselves. Like yesterday, they were busy doing stupid things but nobody cared what we were doing which was absolutely nothing. But it was expected that mom is at arms length when a towel is needed or something has to be held like glasses or money is needed from good old dad (that was me).

Since we were out all day under the sun I was pretty exhausted and when we got home I sat down on the sofa and promptly fell asleep. I got a little sunburn which I really don't mind but my poor wife really got burnt. She has very sensitive white skin and it is now red and pink all over. I'm like an elephant (not the nose) my skin can take anything.

Plus wandering in the desert for forty years prepared my skin for the rays of the sun. Being on the beach also reduced my depression a little.

Tuesday

The holiday celebrations are over. We are back to our daily grinds. Abigail is officially now a middle school graduate. Her tassels have been moved from the right side to the left side.

This was the short version. Now the slightly longer version is here.

The surprise guest for that came to the graduation was her 22 year old sister who resides in Florida. Her arrival was kept in secret so tight that nobody except us and the sister knew about it.

She arrived on Saturday and when we brought her home from the airport she rang the doorbell while we hid. You should have seen Abigail's face when she opened the door. Her surprise and joy was just unbelievable.

Sunday the sisters and their brother went in to Manhattan and had a great time there. I guess sometimes it is nice being without a parent.

Monday was the graduation ceremony which was pretty nice. It was amazing to se ow different kids of the same age are. Some are still extremely childish while others behaved like serious adults. I don't know which would I prefer. I guess a little bit of both.

After the ceremony we went to a photo studio to have a few social family pictures taken where everybody pretended to like everybody else. After the photo shoot we all went out to dinner. That was pretty much the end of the celebration.

This morning up early and out to the airport where the eldest daughter boarded her flight and headed home.

In short, it was a little stormy family reunion. The kids have a tendency to hold their mother responsible for everything and I just don't like it. A few time even I lost my cool which is rare with me.

Speaking about Abigail. She just informed us that tomorrow her and about nine "close" friends are going to Coney Island to spend the day there and we are the responsible adults.

Do we need this? My wife and I could have nice day together but no, we have to chaperone ten kids whom we don't even know to a day at the beach.

Friday

Today we are having a very busy day at this household. As I mentioned it earlier Monday is Abigail's graduation day from middle school.

We are looking for a weekend of celebrations.

These celebrations include a mystery visitor that the family with the exceptions my wife and I have no clue about. Oh, the visitor knows about it!

There will be family eatings both at our house and in a restaurant. We also have a surprise entertainment event scheduled for Sunday night.

We will also go to a photo studio right after the graduation ceremony on Monday for family pictures.

We are not planning to buy any presents because the Playstation was a combined Birthday and Graduation present. I just hope Abigail will remember.

I remember back in the beginning of the history of mankind when I finished my middle school after the last school day I went home and that was it. Nothing special. However, I think I got a new Doxa wristwatch rom my father.

Actually that was my first wristwatch and I still have it and I think it is still running.

They don't make things like this today. And that means us as well.

Thursday

Today was the one before last day of school for Abigail before the graduation ceremony for the eighth grade kids. They are slowly winding down meaning that are doing nothing just socializing.

For quite a while there were no homework. I think when I went to school we studied until the last day. Here they are being prepared for tests and exams. Most of the kids are already accepted to some high school so what's the point studying  any more?

The way I see it the whole educational system sucks. But the kids like it and that is what important.

She also brought home her yearbook where her friends scribed their remarks. It is amazing how stupid, cruel and thoughtless 14 year olds can be. And how when they think something is funny it isn't.

But it is their world and all we can do is grin and bear it.

Something else

Today we made a pit stop our favorite European butcher shop and bought oodles of good  cold cuts. Whenever I go to this or any other European meat store I am constantly amazed how bland the American cold cut market is.

Ham, bologna, salami, pepperoni and a few other similarly boring stuff. Even in St. Maarten in the supermarket there were French and Dutch cold cuts that were far above the American ones. Representative of the fact that American cold cuts were stashed away in a dark corner while the European one in front of everybody else.

As much as I dislike Russians I have to admit their cold cuts are good and tasty.

Tuesday/Wednesday

Since yesterday I am in a total depression and that is why I didn't write. I didn't want to write today either but my wife "forced" her way with me.

She said write down my feelings honestly and as long as she likes it it will be ok. That much for democracy in our household!

Now, why am I depressed? I tell you.

Past several days the weather is nice and sunny. Not balmy but really nice. I am dying to go out to the beach, stretch out under the sun and work on my tan. If possible dip my toes in the water or venture in even further.

Every day I wake up with the hope that maybe today we go out for a few hours.

But NOOOOOOOO!

It didn't yet happen and probably it never will.

My wife is giving me some lame excuses each time. Like she has to cook, she has to clean the apartment or she has to do the laundry. Oh, and right now Abigail is still in school and we really do not have an entire day to spend out there.

Graduation is next Monday and I can't wait to hear next week's excuses.

My wife baked me a cake, fed me ice cream, gave me fruits hoping to ease my depression. They are not working. I am really driving her up the wall with my constant whining about wanting to go to the beach.

Maybe they will take me out for Fathers Day.

Monday

My stepson and his girlfriend moved into a very nice new apartment at the first of this month. The apartment is not far from us and we see them quite frequently.

He has a dog that is classified as a Service Dog. This dog is as big as as small pony and as lame as a lamb. Loves everybody and does not bark. We think if a burglar would break in the apartment he would make friends with him. Just hope we'll never have the chance to find out.

Anyway, the apartment is just opposite the largest park in Queens. It is a beautiful park. Full of trails and larger roadways. Car traffic is forbidden meaning people do nat have to watch out for traffic.

The past couple of days we criss crossed the park under the guise of walking the dog. I have to admit we all had a great time. The air was fresh and clear, the people we met were all nice and friendly and the environment was just enjoyable.

Yesterday we walked about two hours, today we walked again about two hours. The dog was so tired he barely dragged his feet. I was not far behind him. My wife and stepson fared a lot better.

I really enjoy these little walks out there and I am looking forward to our next excursion into nature's lap.

Sunday

My lovely wife has been asking for a while that she would like to go to some kind of a flea market. In the city, outside the city it didn't matter but she wanted to see a flea market.

So the thoughtful husband that I am I searched and found some places in Manhattan where they show antique stuff. We woke up at he crack of dawn then went back to sleep. Then later on really got up, got ready snd drove into big bad Manhattan. Being Sunday morning it was pretty easy drive.

Went directly to West 25th Street where we found and outdoor antique flea market and a few permanent antique galleries.

Now, walking around what they call antiques is for me a traumatic experience. Stuff they sell as antiques is stuff I grew up with. Items some people don't even know what are they for I used on daily bases or had in our apartment.

One thing we saw the guy said it was made in the 30s and it still works pretty good. I told him that I was made in the 30s and I still work pretty good.

At the end we bought a small electric samovar made in the 40s, a heavy wood cabinet made about a 100 years ago and a copper fireplace cleaning set made about two weeks ago. Oh, and we also bought a small cast iron shirt hand iron the type my mother used to make.

The bottom line is these places have more junk than a junk yard but they also have a lot of good items.

There was a small carved figurine of Moses holding the ten Commandments. The guy said it was $20. I offered $15 he said no. He was very obnoxious and said he would rather throw it out to the garbage than give it away for $15.

But there were also nice vendors, too.

Now our apartment has less available space for oxygen.

Saturday

I mentioned that a couple of weeks ago we purchased three free standing air conditioners for the apartment. There is one in almost every room and when the weather is warm they work pretty well.

At least I hope so because since we bought them until about today we had nothing but cool weather. It's ok because at least we are having on the electricity.

The problem we are having is that they are all using 110 Volt currency and when they are on we can not use any strong appliances. When my wife uses the vacuum cleaner it blows out the circuit. When the ladies are using the hair dryer it blows out the circuit.

We are having circuit breakers so all that is happening is that they trip and need to be reset. The ones that trip are the 15 Amp and some of the 20 Amp breakers. I will have to talk to the building super to see if they can reinforce these breakers. I know that it will cost money but he, it is part of being a homeowner.

Speaking of being a homeowner. Last week one day when we came home my wife found a nice puddle under the kitchen sink. When we checked it out it turned out the the elbow under it was continuously leaking.

Next morning the building handyman came up and announced it not only the cleanup plug was rusted but the pipe also had a hole in it. Easy to fix it but I have to pay for it.

I figured I'll give him a $20 for his efforts when he kindly advised me that it would cost $65. He also told me that whatever happens inside the apartment is our responsibility since we own it.

I had no choice but forked out the $65 and had my first lesson in home ownership.

Friday

As far as I know, and I do admit I don't know everything prom dances are usually held at the end of the high school years nd consequently most of the participants are about 18 years old. I know that there are exceptions and Abigail's school was one of them.

She is now finishing middle school which puts most of the students at the 13-14 year old category. Her school decided to hold a prom dance for the eighth grade class students who are living the school at the end of this term.

Last night was the event for the dance. It was held in a catering hall and lasted from six until ten at night.

Buying the proper dress and shoes was a main event. She really didn't know what she wanted so the originally bought dress was returned and a new one was purchased not long ago. Shoes went a little bit easier but that was also an uphill battle.

Finally, with hair done and all dressed up she did look beautiful.

We drove her to the hall last night and had the opportunity to see most of the other kids.

My final verdict is that 13-14 year old boys act like real jerks. Thinking back I probably acted the same way.

Girls without exception want to look older than they are. Most of them dressed to the nines. Either long gowns or short, really short dresses. Whatever attributes they had they were free to exhibit it. What I enjoyed seeing the most was that most of the girl chose to wear high heel shoes and by the end of the night they were almost crawled on fours because it was so hard to walk in them.

Many of these girls looked anything but fourteen years old. And that is no good. All that does is invite trouble. Where are the parents when these girls are getting dressed?

Fortunately for us Abigail dressed appropriately for her age

Thursday

At this time I am glad I am at the age I am!

Not that anything can be changed about it but still I am glad.

Today we went to the high school where Abigail will start in September. There was a good two hours long orientation for the new students.

The school has a capacity for about 3,800 pupils. There were about 30,000 applicants of which about 500 were accepted. Abigail was accepted to the school's Drama Academy which had 500 applicant but only 24 were accepted.

Bottom line is that she did well by being accepted here.

Now why am I glad that I'm ver this school thing?

There were so many things discussed at this orientation that my head was spinning. The kids are supposed to remember everything they were told. They have a myriad of options for clubs, sports and other type of involvements that it is unbelievable.

ThanDrama Academy will create plays, will make short movies and learn the behind the scene goings ons.

School can start as early a 7:35 and can run as late as 3:35. These are long days.

I remember I had long days in my school but never started before 8 in the morning.

Aside from the programs they were given so much instructions on lockers, behavior, absenteeism, dress codes and other stuff that I could not remember half of it. But then it is not I who have to go there.

Old age has some advantages!

Wednesday

It is June 8 and I haven't been out to the sun yet. I'm dying because of the lack of my vitamin D infusion.

Every time we decide to go out to the beach something unscheduled event happens and there goes an opportunity. Not that it is such a fantastic swimming weather because it is not.

This morning, for example it was 63 degrees, really chilly. But since the sun is strong it is nice to just lay around and get e tan. Going into the water is a farfetched idea for me.

Kids go in but kids have no sensory nerves. They don't feel the coldness of the water. I guess they are built differently than us, normal grownups.

Right now we said if the weather is nice we plan to take a short show on the beach on Friday. But it remains to be seen.

With my luck every time we have something else to do we are having tropical heat. Want to go to beach it is record breaking cold or rain. That is my luck.

Something else.

It is amazing what entertains today's kids. We bought this idiotic Playstation for Abigail and by now she is an accomplished assassin or mercenary. Her machine gun talents are amazing. And they are all doing this.

I fail to see the educational value in this stuff.

Tuesday

Why do I remember what we did on a particular day so vividly?

I really do not remember at all but this has a history behind it.

When I was about 13-14-15 years old my mother's sister, my aunt gave me a leather bound calendar for that particular year. Since I studied French in middle school I still remember enough to start writing a daily diary in French.

When I finished the year I continued writing in that same book with a different colored pen and this went on for a few years.

Anyway, since that time I have been keeping diaries for almost every year. Maybe I skipped a few at the beginning of my being in this country.

But now I have volumes and volumes of diaries in every possible drawer in this house. This is not a collection of sentimental feelings. These are a collection of daily events of what I did, where I was, who did I meet.

It might be boring to others but it is interesting reading for me.

On trips, vacations I keep a separate book because I write with a little more detail than usual.

I figured that in later years somebody might be interested to read where and how I spent my times. If nobody cares that is fine too.

Monday

Here is what my friend and I did exactly a year ago today. By the way we were in Budapest.

We got up at 7:45 in the morning. Wasted the entire morning b.s-ing in the apartment. I have to add that my friend and I love to talk.

We went on the internet and bought tickets to see the Parliament. That is the center of the Hungarian government and legislature. It is a beautiful building and one can get in to se it by buying tickets in advance.

Like the good tourists we were we did buy tickets.

Interestingly while we both did grow up in Budapest neither of us ever visited the Parliament. We figured it was time to do it now.

Around lunchtime we went to the Central Market where we bought fantastically good food (mangos and palacsinta). The place is a tourist attractions so naturally it is filled with gift shops.

We spent considerable time looking and buying presents.

After that went over to the Buda side and took the funicular up Castle Hill where we did some serious walking around.

Around 6:30 pm we had dinner in a seafood restaurant where we had good seafood spiked with good beer.

Long walk on the shores of the Danube River then home. At midnight our day was over.

Sunday

Today is Sunday. I decided to sleep until noon or kind of noonish then if the weather is nice we would go out to the beach.

Well, it didn't turn out exactly like that. I couldn't sleep 'till noon because I had to get up around 9 and start to do some household chores.

The beach went down the drain because it started to rain cats and dogs and besides it was chilly.

Third, my wife and Abigail decided that today was the day we would go and purchase the Playstation.

Now, me being the god husband I meekly agree to everything the females in my household decide. This is a very democratic system we are having.

Majority rules and  the loser just obeys! It does not mean that he is happy but he obeys.

P.s. We bought the stuff and Abigail spent the afternoon wiping out scores of humanity. Whatever happened to playing with dolls?

Sunday, June 5, 2016

Saturday

Today finally my wife and I had a very nice and uneventful day. Meaning no kid troubles, no help with the unpacking or anything else.

We had a chance to be with ourselves. Abigail was so tired from yesterday's amusement park trip that she slept until noon. And I immensely enjoyed the quiet in the house.

It seems she had a great time yesterday and can't wait to go back there again. Well, the bad news is that she will have to wait until quite a while.

The place is about three hours drive from here. The park fee is about $80 a head. For my wife and I just to walk around for $160 is a little ridiculous. So we will see how this will be handled.

Something else.

Tonight we went out to diner with some friends. We found a cute little Polish restaurant not far from us and that was where we went to. The place was full but we got a nice table. The food was good, not a lot but we all enjoyed it.

The Polish beer was really good. Don't remember the name but I know it was good.

We sat there and talked for about two and a half hours, long after we finished dinner. There are a lots of good things on the menu and I'm sure (like General MacArthur) we shall return.

Friday

I just want to continue how hard it is to be a child in this world. Abigail is in her eight grade. That is the last grade in middle school and next year she is starting high school.

Their curriculum is amazing. This year so far they went to a gaming parlor where they played electronic games all day long. One day they went to see a Broadway show while on two other times they went to the movies. Last week her class was taken to a nearby MacDonald's as present from the school.

Today her class and some other eight grade classes went to Great Adventure for the entire day. They left early in the morning and should be back by 8 pm.

Thankfully this is the end of the school year and there are no more excursions planned. Remaining are the graduation ball and the graduation ceremony itself.

These little trips are not free. The parents are expected to pay the school for everything.

I can't see the education value in any of their. When I was going to school w might have gone once to see a movie at a special student screening. And surely that was a soviet film.

And these kids have the nerve to complain how hard their life is.

Mea Culpa

Mea culpa, mea culpa! I know I didn't write for a few days but I do have serious excuse. I was very busy every day and by the time we got home I was so tired that just couldn't see myself sitting down and "create".

Today promised to be a nice quiet day but just didn't turn out to be one.

My wife and I were going non stop from the morning on until about ten tonight. The son and his girlfriend came over for dinner and that is always a tumultuous affair.

But the main event was that today is Abigail's 14th birthday. We didn't have any major celebration except her brother here. She also didn't get any presents this time. Because of her recent behavior she was told she wouldn't get anything.

But if she behaves she would get a combination graduation/birthday present.

When I was at that age I got a fountain pen or a book and I was happy. Today if it is not a playstation with an accompanying game don't even attempt.

That is the attitude of today's youth. The way I see it it is sickening.

The playstation is not inexpensive but it is fine, I guess. But the games she listed are really disturbing. They are about the end of the world, alien attacks,  constant killings and other equally disturbing things.

The fact that they are labeled not for children does not bother her. She said if we want to buy anything that is for children don't even bother buying it.

When will things improve?
